Kayaking is an outdoor pursuit that can serve as both a workout and a very enjoyable way to spend time outdoors. New Yorkers have several options for kayaking in Manhattan on either of the two rivers that surround the island. For those looking for downtown views, the Downtown Boathouse, a volunteer-run nonprofit, offers free kayaking during the summer at Pier 26 in Manhattan and on Governors Island. For those who’d rather kayak on the Hudson River, Hudson River Park offers both canoeing and kayaking experiences, both free and with tour guides at Pier 84. The Manhattan Community Boathouse at Pier 96 also offers free kayaking. Finally, you can go further north on the island to the Inwood Canoe Club, which offers 20-minute tours of the Hudson River and operates a mostly free public paddling program, only charging $4 per day or $15 for the full season.
