Dyan Gershman is the founder of Gershman Law, PLLC, a boutique corporate law firm based in New York City that provides a broad range of services, from mergers and acquisitions to general counsel services. In her spare time, Dyan Gershman is an avid tennis player and played for several years on a team for the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The USTA has built a unique American Development Model (ADM) to provide a framework for coaches and parents of young athletes.
The key principles behind the ADM are universal access to coaching and developmentally appropriate programs. The ADM recognizes three developmental stages in athletic training. The first stage of the model includes participants younger than age 11 or those with 0-3 years of athletic experience for disabled athletes. In this stage, the primary function is to introduce the athlete to the fun and developmental aspects of the sport, avoiding any distinction between competition and recreation. The second stage of ADM is tailored for ages between 12 and 18, or athletes with disabilities with 3-6 years of experience. In this stage, the theme is on development and challenge, and provides athletes a broad overview of competitive tennis and possible careers. The ADM recommends between 10 and 16 hours of active play a week in this age group for players wanting to excel in the sport. The third stage, termed “Play for Life,” is designed for ages 18 and up. The primary focus in this stage is tennis-specific training, active play, and participation in structured competitions.
